Fairplay Colorado is located 21 miles north of Antero Junction on U.S. Hwy 285 at an elevation of 9,958 feet. The scenic portion of Hwy 285, which runs through Pike National Forest between Poncha Springs and Morrison passes through town.
Main routes into the area are U.S. Hwy 24, U.S. Hwy 285, and State Hwy 9. Nearest commercial airports are Aspen, Denver International and Colorado Springs. The town of Fairplay was named by gold prospectors who settled it in 1859 when they were driven from nearby Tarryall by miners who had staked more claims than they could work. In "Fair Play" every man would have an equal chance to stake a claim. Visitors aware of the town's gold-mining roots will find it impossible to miss the remains of the industry that mark the surrounding country side. Anyone interested in the history of the old west and western mining should visit the South Park City Museum in Fairplay. |
